NFL Free Picks are complimentary bets that are given out by the Covers Experts on National Football League games. They are generally 1-star plays, whereas Premium Picks range from 5-star to 10-star plays. You can use NFL Free Picks to gain insights into how the handicappers break down professional football games before making a Premium Picks. Most NFL bettors would see these odds and take New Orleans to cover because they assume that Drew Brees is going to do what he does best, and connect with every receiver he can. His accuracy is near perfect, so it would make sense for you to lean toward the favorite on this bet. There are three common NFL betting lines: the side, total and moneyline. Side: The side refers to the point spread. While the odds can fluctuate, most sides are -110, meaning you have to bet $110.

NFL Week 5 will start with Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers looking to push their winning streak to four games against an old nemesis in Nick Foles.

The week’s slate will conclude with Drew Brees and the Saints taking on his former Chargers team led by rookie quarterback Justin Herbert.

In between, there’s going to be some fun matchups on tap. Can the Philadelphia Eagles pull off another upset win after taking out the San Francisco 49ers in Week 4? How will the Cowboys’ league-worst defense perform against a 32nd-ranked Giants offense?

Looking at that and more, we check in on NFL Week 5 odds and point spreads with a quick one liner for each matchup.

NFL Week 5 Thursday Night Football

© Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady (12) celebrates on the sideline against the Los Angeles Chargers in the third quarter of a NFL game at Raymond James Stadium.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Chicago Bears

Point spread: Buccaneers -5.5 (over/under 44.5)

After throwing a pick-six to open last week’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers, Tom Brady threw five touchdowns en route to leading Tampa Bay to a third consecutive victory. Now in his 21st NFL season, this was the seventh time in his career that Brady has thrown five or more touchdowns in a game. For comparison’s sake, the Bears have gone 29 games without scoring as many as five touchdowns.

NFL Week 5 Sunday games

© Jim Dedmon-USA TODAY Sports Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule talks with quarterback Teddy Bridgewater (5) during the second half against the Arizona Cardinals at Bank of America Stadium.

Carolina Panthers at Atlanta Falcons

Point spread: Falcons -3.0 (over/under 54.5)

Carolina’s 31-21 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Week 4 represented the team’s second win in eight days. Prior to that, the Panthers had gone 329 days without securing a victory. This just goes to show how vastly improved Matt Rhule’s squad is heading into Week 5. Atlanta might be the favorite here, but look for Carolina to make yet another statement with Teddy Bridgewater continuing to do his thing.

Las Vegas Raiders at Kansas City Chiefs

Point spread: Chiefs -12.0 (over/under 57.0)

Following last week’s loss to the Buffalo Bills, the Las Vegas defense has given up 30-plus points in three of four games this season. The defense has recorded a total of four sacks in four games. As for the Chiefs, they have dropped 30-plus in six of their past eight games dating back to last season. The Chiefs have also outscored Las Vegas 103-22 in their past three outings. Math isn’t hard.

Denver Broncos at New England Patriots

Point spread: Patriots -8.5 (over/under 45.5)

Following Brett Rypien’s debut in Week 4’s win over the Jets, Denver has now started three quarterbacks in four weeks. Given the struggles from these signal callers (six touchdowns, six interceptions), it stands to reason that an elite Patriots defense will help keep this game under 45.5. Of course, that’s dependent on the status of Cam Newton after he missed Week 4 following a positive COVID-19 diagnosis.

Los Angeles Rams at Washington Football Team

Point spread: Rams -9.0 (over/under 46.0)

Washington has now scored less than 20 points in 10 of its past 14 games dating back to last season. That very same span has seen the team yield 30-plus points in half of its outings. Taking on former assistant Sean McVay and the Rams in this one, Washington faces an offense that’s averaging 26.5 points on the season. The last time Washington met this threshold? Back in 2012 when Kyle Shanahan, Matt LaFleur and McVay were assistants in D.C.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Houston Texans

Point spread: Texans -6.5 (over/under 54.5)

It's anemic against anemic in this one. After moving on from Pro Bowl pass rushers Calais Campbell and Yannick Ngakoue, the Jaguars have recorded four sacks in as many games. As for the Texans’ disastrous offensive line, it's allowed 35 sacks of Deshaun Watson over the past eight games. Comparatively, Jags quarterback Gardner Minshew has been taken down 14 times this season. The moral of this story? Take that under, and don’t think twice about it. That’s especially true with Bill O’Brien now gone from Houston.

Buffalo Bills at Tennessee Titans

Point spread: Bills -1 (over/under 49.0)

Bills quarterback Josh Allen has accounted for 15 total touchdowns compared to one interception at the quarter pole of the season. This has him on pace for what would be a record 60 touchdowns from the quarterback position. Allen is also on pace for 5,636 total yards. With a week off due to a COVID-19 outbreak, how will the Titans defend this?

Arizona Cardinals at New York Jets

Point spread: Cardinals -6.5 (over/under 47.5)

Adam Gase is supposedly an offensive mind, right? This unit ranks 32nd in total yards, 32nd in yards per play, 32nd in first downs, 32nd in passing, 31st in scoring, 31st in time of possession and 31st in yards per play. Regardless of the Cardinals’ struggles over the past two weeks, they should be able to win going away. Just be weary about the over. It’s not like the Jets offense is going to help out much in that regard.

Philadelphia Eagles at Pittsburgh Steelers

Nfl Covers Odds

Point spread: Steelers -7.0 (over/under 45.0)

Despite last week’s win, Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz has thrown seven interceptions and has been sacked 14 times in four games. Those are not numbers indicative of a winning team in today’s NFL. You know what numbers are? Pittsburgh has yielded six passing touchdowns compared to four interceptions while sacking opposing quarterbacks 15 times in three games. With an additional week off after Sunday’s game was postponed, look for Mike Tomlin and Co. to take advantage.

Cincinnati Bengals at Baltimore Ravens

Point spread: Ravens -13.5 (over/under 52.0)

Bengals rookie quarterback Joe Burrow has now thrown for 300-plus yards in three consecutive games after leading his team to its first win of the season last week. The reigning Heisman winner is on pace to tally nearly 4,500 yards with to go with 28 total touchdowns and just eight interceptions. Keep that in mind with Baltimore as a near-two-touchdown favorite against its division rival.

Miami Dolphins at San Francisco 49ers

Point spread: 49ers -8.0 (over/under 46.5)

Nfl Odds For Weekend Games

Following last week’s terrible three-turnover performance from backup quarterback Nick Mullens, the defending NFC champs moved to 2-2 on the season. San Francisco is now 5-21 in games that Jimmy Garoppolo has not started since the beginning of the 2017 campaign. The team is 20-6 in his 26 starts during that span. The math lines up here. If Garoppolo can go, take the 49ers and the points. If not, this could be an upset special.

New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys

Point spread: Cowboys -9.0 (over/under 54.0)

First off, this 54.0 over/under is pretty hilarious. Dallas is averaging 31.5 points per game through the first four weeks. It is also on a historically bad pace defensively, giving up 36.5 points per outing. Sure New York ranks dead last in offense, but the Cowboys couldn’t stop a drunken sloth from doing damage against this defense. Take the Cowboys and the over. As for the nine-point spread, these Giants are losing by an average of 12.2 points per game.

Indianapolis Colts at Cleveland Browns

Nfl Covers Odds

Point spread: Colts -2.5(over/under 47.5)

Cleveland finds itself at 3-1 for just the second time since the 1994 season. It has scored the most points in a three-game stretch for the organization (118) in over a half-century. Meanwhile, the Colts have given up 29 points over the past three games. In a battle between two surprise three-win teams, this is strength against strength. Maybe consider the over given Cleveland’s struggles on defense (31.5 point per game against).

NFL Week 5 Sunday Night Football

© Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports eattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson (3) looks on after defeating the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium.

Minnesota Vikings at Seattle Seahawks

Point spread: Seahawks -7.0 (over/under 58.0)

Even when he’s not at his best, Russell Wilson is doing things that defy logic. The MVP front-runner threw just his second interception of the season in last week’s win over the Miami Dolphins. Through the quarter pole in the season, Wilson is on pace for north of 5,100 passing yards to go with 64 passing touchdowns and eight interceptions. The Vikings? Well, they are yielding 31.3 points per game and an opposing quarterback rating of 105.2.

NFL Week 5 Monday Night Football

© Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert

Los Angeles Chargers at New Orleans Saints

Point spread: Saints -7.5(over/under 52.0)

Presumed Chargers starter Justin Herbert was not even born yet when Drew Brees made his college debut for Purdue back in 1997. When Brees joined the Saints after five seasons with the Chargers, Herbert was a mere eight years old. In fact, he just celebrated his birthday when Brees made the move to New Orleans. That really doesn’t have much of an impact on the betting lines here. However, 12 of the Chargers’ 14 losses since the start of last season have come by one score. Think about taking New Orleans minus the points here.

Nba Picks

Of course, if you are new to NFL betting, or sports betting in general, you will first need to understand what you are looking at in terms of NFL spreads, moneylines and point totals. A few complementary NFL betting tips never hurt anyone, either. Let’s get started.

Football Betting Odds And Lines

NFL Betting Glossary & Tips

Spread – The most popular way to bet on NFL football is by betting on a team against the spread (ATS). You will either wager on the favorite or the underdog to cover the spread. The Favorite is the team giving or laying points (ex: Chiefs -7). The underdog is the team getting points (ex: Colts +7).

By betting on the underdog, the team does not have to win the game for you to win your bet. You need them to lose by less than the number of points they are getting. If they win outright, you will win your bet too. Example: If you bet on the Indianapolis Colts +7, the bet wins if the Colts lose by six points or less (or win outright), you push (no money won or loss) if they lose by exactly seven points, and you lose if the Colts lose by eight or more.

NFL Betting Tip: Be aware of NFL key numbers when betting, the two most important numbers being 3 and 7. It is more common for teams to win by 3 or 7 points than any other margin of victory. The third-most common margin of victory is 10 points. Often, you will find different point spreads across different sportsbooks. If one sportsbook has a team favored by 7 points, by using our odds comparison tool, you can quickly find out if another sportsbook has the spread at 6.5 or 7.5 points. Finding the best spread is arguably the biggest factor in making you a profitable bettor over the long term.

Money Line – By betting on the moneyline, you are only wagering on what team will win or lose. Large favorites require you to risk more money than you will win (ex: Chiefs -300, requires you to risk $30 to win $10). Conversely, betting on underdogs will earn bettors more money than they risk (ex: Bengals +300, a $10 bet will earn you $30 profit).

NFL Betting Tip: While it is important to take or give points when the team you like is on the right side of key numbers, what do you do if the spread is not on the right side of the key number? Maybe you love an underdog and even think they have a chance to upset the favorite but the spread is +2, not quite reaching that key number of 3. The moneyline might be more enticing here. Some historical data shows that break-even percentages on moneyline underdogs are better than that on moneyline favorites

Total (Over/Under) – When you bet on the point total, you’re betting on the total number of points scored by both teams. So if a game has a total (or Over/Under) of 49 points before kickoff, you can bet on Over or Under 49 total combined points between the two teams for the entire game. Points scored in overtime are included. There are also point totals for quarters and halves.

NFL Betting Tip: Try to spot teams who have changed things up, whether by adding a key player in the NFL free agency or identifying a generational talentbefore others do, such as Patrick Mahomes. During the 2018-19 season, in Mahomes’ first year as a starter, the Kansas City Chiefs went Over their respective point totals in each of their first three games. By the end of the season, Chiefs Over/Under record was 10-5-1.

Vigorish (vig) or Juice – The vig or juice is the cut sportsbooks take from bettors to place their bets. This is the house edge. Sportsbooks typically have a vig of -110 on both sides of a bet, meaning you have to risk $11 for every $10 you want to win. Taking into account the vigorish, you need to win not half of your bets but at least 52.4% to break even.

NFL Betting Tip: While -110 is most common, some sportsbooks are nicer than others when it comes to vigorish. You will want to use SAO’s odds tool to find which sportsbooks are charging the least amount for your NFL picks.

Other NFL betting Terms

Parlay – A parlay involves two or more picks, all of which have to win for your parlay to pay out. You have a three-team parlay, and two of your picks win but the last game loses? Tough luck, you lose the entire bet. Parlays are attractive to bettors because of their large payouts. Two-team parlays traditionally pay 2.6-to-1, three-team parlays pay 6-to-1, four-team parlays pay 10-to-1, etc. Though we refer to these as “two-team parlays,” parlays can consist of picks on the point totals and sometimes even props. Use our parlay calculator for your convenience.

NFL Betting Tip: Remember, NFL lines are extremely efficient. In fact, the NFL is arguably the toughest sport to beat over the long haul. Parlays require perfection, making it even more difficult for you to win on Sunday.

Teasers – Like a parlay, teasers require more than one pick, and all picks in your teaser must hit. NFL teasers are a popular way of moving multiple point spreads (or totals) to bettors’ advantage. Since the points are adjusted in the bettor’s favor, teasers do not have as large of payouts as parlays

NFL Betting Tip: Generally speaking, teasing football point totals does not raise your win rate enough to make teasing advantageous. This is especially true in college football, but even in the NFL, it is much sharper to focus on teasers that move point spreads through key numbers like 3 and 7.

Nfl Lines

Live Betting – Live betting occurs after a game starts. Did you sleep in or forget to place a bet, missing the kickoff of an NFL game you wanted to bet on? Most US sportsbooks will have live lines available for you to bet on while the game is still in progress.

NFL Betting Tip: Live lines are not as efficient as closing lines in sports betting. Watch games closely, take in the extra information available, and use live lines to your advantage, especially if you notice something that you believe sportsbooks’ live algorithms are not accounting for.
